DSWD Launches Podcast Against Misinformation

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 1 has launched an innovative podcast, Eh Ano Ngayon? (So What?), aimed at debunking widespread myths about social welfare services. The monthly Facebook Live program tackles complex social service topics in a casual, engaging format, ensuring that accurate information reaches the Ilocano community.

Recognizing the growing challenge of misinformation, DSWD created the podcast as a direct response to misleading claims circulating online. By providing clarity on government programs, Eh Ano Ngayon? empowers citizens to make informed decisions regarding their social benefits.

Tackling Misinformation: Key Topics Discussed

The podcast’s first episode, aired on January 30, featured DSWD Field Office 1 Regional Director Marie Angela Gopalan and Assistant Regional Director for Operations Anniely Ferrer. Together, they addressed common misconceptions, including:

  • Senior Citizens’ P1,000 Pension – Viral claims about a guaranteed monthly pension through the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) were debunked. Officials clarified that pension eligibility follows strict guidelines under the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010. Priority is given to indigent seniors who do not receive pensions from the Social Security System (SSS) or Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).
  • Centenarians’ Incentive – Filipinos who reach 100 years old are eligible for a P100,000 incentive, but early registration (at least a year before their centennial birthday) is necessary to ensure proper verification. Families are encouraged to coordinate with their local Office of Senior Citizen Affairs (OSCA) for assistance.
  • Disaster Relief Operations – The podcast clarified the role of local government units (LGUs) in disaster response. While LGUs lead relief efforts, DSWD provides additional support when disasters affect larger regions. The “rule of two” determines aid responsibility based on the affected area’s size.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

With its light, relatable tone, Eh Ano Ngayon? has been well received by the public. Regional Information Officer Kristine Sheila Amoroso emphasized the importance of the podcast in bridging the gap between bureaucratic processes and public understanding.

“We are very glad about the reception of the audience and how effective the light format was,” Amoroso said.

DSWD plans to continue expanding the podcast’s reach, addressing more misconceptions and answering public concerns in future episodes. By making social welfare discussions more accessible, Eh Ano Ngayon? strengthens public trust and ensures that accurate, government-verified information prevails in the digital age.
