History

The Kain Tayo Pilipinas (KTP) movement was launched as a flagship program under the broader Pilipinas Kontra Gutom (PKG) initiative.

This movement was initiated by a coalition of private sector entities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and government partners.

The primary objective is to address hunger and malnutrition, particularly among children aged 5 years and below, who are most vulnerable to the adverse effects of undernutrition.

The movement officially kicked off during National Nutrition Month in July, with significant backing from various sectors, including major corporations, media, and government agencies like the Department of Education, Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), and the National Nutrition Council (NNC).

Significance

Kain Tayo Pilipinas (KTP) aims to tackle the pressing issues of hunger and malnutrition in the Philippines, where one in three children suffers from undernourishment.

The movement is particularly important in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated food insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable populations.

The movement employs a three-fold approach:

  • Feeding Programs: Providing nutritious meals to children and families in need.
  • Educational Campaigns: Educating families on proper nutrition, breastfeeding, maternal and child supplementation, dietary diversity, and sanitation.
  • Collaboration: Bringing together private companies, NGOs, and government agencies to create a united front against hunger and malnutrition.

It is designed to complement existing government programs and laws, such as the Masustansyang Pagkain para sa Batang Pilipino Act (Republic Act 11037), which focuses on providing nutritious meals to undernourished children in public schools.

Legal Framework

While the Philippines does not have a comprehensive national policy specifically addressing the right to adequate food, several governmental efforts and programs aim to combat hunger and malnutrition. These include:

These programs are part of a broader strategy to promote food security and nutritional well-being at the community level.

The Kain Tayo Pilipinas (KTP) movement aligns with these efforts by providing additional resources and support through its multi-sectoral collaboration.

A Collaborative Effort

Kain Tayo Pilipinas is a flagship program under the Pilipinas Kontra Gutom (PKG) movement.

It is led by private corporations, media, NGOs, and key government agencies such as the Department of Education, DOST-FNRI, and the National Nutrition Council.

Launched during Nutrition Month, this represents a new milestone in the journey of the multi-sectoral movement aiming for Zero Hunger in the Philippines.

The Impact of Malnutrition

Malnutrition can cause irreversible damage, affecting children for the rest of their lives.

In the Philippines, one in three children experience undernourishment, and more are at risk due to the pandemic’s impact.

Kain Tayo Pilipinas aims to complement feeding efforts with educational programs on nutrition to address this important issue.

The Importance of Early Nutritional Intervention

“The first 1,000 days of life are significant for every child’s growth.

We aim for nutritional intervention at the earliest stage because it’s not enough to prevent hunger; each individual must get the right nutrients to lead a healthy life,” shares Kristine Go, the lead for Kain Tayo Pilipinas from Unilever Philippines.

Key Participants and Supporters

The movement is a collaboration of various organizations:

  • NGOs: ABS-CBN Foundation, GMA Kapuso Foundation, Kabisig ng Kalahi, Kusina ng Kalinga, Project Pearls, Rise Against Hunger, World Food Programme Philippines, Philippine Business for Social Progress.

Three-Fold Approach: Feeding, Education, and Collaboration

Kain Tayo Pilipinas adopts a comprehensive approach to tackle hunger and malnutrition:

  1. Feeding Programs: Providing nutritious meals to children and families in need.
  2. Educational Campaigns: Educating families about proper nutrition, including breastfeeding, maternal and child supplementation, dietary diversity, low-cost fortified food, and proper sanitation.
  3. Collaboration: Utilizing an analytics map to coordinate efforts among all partners, promoting zero overlap and maximum reach.

Educating Parents for Sustained Impact

Beyond providing meals, KTP covers teaching sessions and distributes educational materials to empower parents with knowledge on nutrition and health.

These efforts align with ongoing community and national nutrition programs developed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Health’s National Nutrition Council (NNC) and Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI).

Public Participation and Its Importance

Public involvement is essential for the success of Kain Tayo Pilipinas.

This movement encourages everyone to spread awareness and provide monetary support.

Any individual can donate as low as ₱25 to help bring meals and educate more Filipinos.

Call for Public Participation

“Walang magugutom pag lahat tutulong” emphasizes the significant role the public plays in achieving Kain Tayo Pilipinas’ goals.

The diverse group behind this undertaking is united by a common purpose: to alleviate hunger and the nutritional gap among Filipino children.

“We encourage the public to join us by helping spread the word and providing financial support,” explained Kristine Go.
