The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the Bicol region has extended a lifeline to over 1,000 families devastated by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (Trami) and Super Typhoon Pepito (Man-Yi). Over the weekend, the agency disbursed ₱10 million in cash assistance to affected families in Garchitorena, Camarines Sur, under its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program.
Support for Typhoon Survivors
In a statement issued on Monday, DSWD-Bicol Regional Director Norman Laurio highlighted the agency’s dedication to providing compassionate aid during times of crisis.
“Through the AICS program, we aim to lighten the burden on affected families by helping them address basic needs, repair their homes, and rebuild their livelihoods,” Laurio said.
The distribution, held at a covered court in Garchitorena, spanned two days and included residents from the municipality’s 24 barangays, 10 of which are coastal areas severely damaged by storm surges.
Rebuilding Lives
The financial assistance provided is more than just cash—it’s a much-needed resource for families striving to recover from the twin disasters. Many recipients plan to use the aid to purchase food, repair typhoon-damaged homes, or restart small businesses.
The typhoons, which hit weeks apart, caused widespread destruction in Camarines Sur, leaving many residents homeless and without a stable source of income. Local officials estimate that hundreds of homes were partially or completely destroyed, and fishing communities experienced severe losses due to storm surges.
AICS Program: A Source of Relief
The AICS program is a key effort of the DSWD designed to assist individuals and families facing emergencies, disasters, or other crises. In recent years, the program has become a practical tool for the government to provide direct, immediate relief to vulnerable communities.
The DSWD emphasized its commitment to reaching those who need help the most. The agency partnered with local officials to simplify the distribution process and promote transparency. Beneficiaries were pre-identified based on the severity of their losses and need.
Community Impact
Residents expressed gratitude for the timely assistance. “This cash aid will help us buy materials to repair our home and restart our small store,” shared Maria Santos, a mother of three from one of the coastal barangays.
Local leaders in Garchitorena commended the DSWD for its quick response and commitment to assisting affected communities. “This support brings hope to families who have endured so much. It’s a step toward recovery,” said Mayor Ricardo Mendoza.
Ongoing Efforts
While the ₱10 million aid is a strong start, recovery remains a long road for many families in Camarines Sur. The DSWD assured the public of its continued efforts to provide help and back rehabilitation projects in disaster-stricken areas.
With the new year upon us, the affected communities are determined to rebuild their lives, buoyed by the solidarity and support of government agencies and local leaders.
