What is the SESP?

The SESP is a short-term (6 months to 2 years) scholarship program that provides financial assistance to OWWA members and their qualified dependents to pursue TESDA-accredited technical and vocational (tech-voc) courses. This aims to equip participants with valuable techniques and know-hows, enhancing their employability and career prospects, ultimately leading to a better future for themselves and their families.

Significance of the Program

The SESP goes beyond equipping individuals with skills and financial relief; it helps the country through the following:

Boosting the Workforce:

  • Over 120,000 individuals have benefited from SESP, directly contributing to the national workforce.
  • A 2015 study showed 70% of SESP graduates were employed within six months, injecting valuable capacities into the economy.
  • The Philippines ranks 5th globally in sending skilled workers abroad, highlighting the need for initiatives like SESP to offer alternative career paths within the country.

Reducing Overseas Reliance:

  • By providing local employment opportunities, SESP helps diversify the economy. A 2020 PIDS study found skilled OFWs returning home contribute significantly to higher productivity and economic growth.
  • This can potentially reduce dependence on overseas Filipino workers, strengthening families and communities.

Investing in the Future:

  • This aligns with the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028’s focus on investing in human capital.
  • SESP graduates contribute to inclusive and sustainable development by possessing relevant skills for various industries.

To summarize:

  • Boosting the national economy through skilled workforce participation.
  • Diversifying the economy by creating local employment opportunities.
  • Investing in the future by building human capital with relevant skills.

Benefits

  • Free Scholarship: Gain access to quality tech-voc education without the financial burden, with the agency covering the tuition fees up to Php 14,500 per course.
  • Enhanced Skills and Knowledge: Acquire industry-relevant proficiencies and expertise in your chosen field, making you a more competitive candidate in the job market.
  • Improved Job Opportunities: Increase your chances of securing better employment opportunities locally or internationally, with a recognized National Certificate II (NC II) upon completion.
