Living in areas prone to floods or landslides can be stressful and unsafe.

To address this, the National Housing Authority (NHA) has created a housing program for Informal Settler Families (ISFs) in Metro Manila’s danger zones.

What Is the NHA Housing Program?

The NHA Housing Program addresses the needs of ISFs residing in flood-prone areas, riverbanks, and other danger zones. It provides affordable, safe housing options along with access to essential community resources. If you’re eligible, this program can offer you:

  • Affordable Housing Units: Decent, secure homes measuring 24 square meters.
  • Community Facilities: Schools, markets, and livelihood centers to enhance daily living.
  • Socio-Economic Support: Livelihood programs to help you rebuild and thrive.
  • Emergency Assistance: Aid for families affected by natural disasters.

There is no application fee, although some required documents may have minimal costs.

If you’ve been searching for a way to leave behind unsafe living conditions, this program can give you and your family a new beginning.

Who Is Eligible?

Not everyone qualifies for this program. To ensure it helps those in genuine need, the NHA has established specific eligibility criteria:

  • Filipino Citizenship: Applicants must be Filipino citizens.
  • Underprivileged and Homeless: This program is for families without stable housing.
  • No Property Ownership: You cannot own any real property in urban or rural areas.
  • No Involvement in Squatting Syndicates: Applicants should not be professional squatters.

If you meet these criteria, this program is designed to support you in creating a safer and brighter future for your family.

Application Process: Step by Step

Applying for the NHA Housing Program may seem daunting, but it’s straightforward if you follow these steps:

  1. Prepare Your Documents:
    • Completed application form.
    • Valid government-issued IDs for all family members.
    • Proof of income (e.g., payslips, income tax returns).
    • Barangay certification confirming your residency and status as an informal settler.
    • Affidavit of no property ownership.
  2. Submit Your Application: Visit your local NHA office and provide all necessary documents.
  3. Verification Process: The NHA will review your application and verify your eligibility.
  4. Wait for Approval: Once approved, you’ll be informed of the next steps for resettlement or housing assignment.

Following these steps carefully can make the process smoother and quicker.

What Does the Program Offer?

Housing Units:

The program provides safe and affordable housing units designed to meet the needs of families transitioning from danger zones. Each 24-square-meter unit offers a secure environment to help you start fresh.

Community Facilities:

Living in a new community can feel overwhelming, but the program ensures you’re equipped with the essentials. You’ll find:

  • Schools for your children’s education.
  • Wet markets for fresh produce and daily needs.
  • Livelihood centers to support employment and skills development.

Socio-Economic Support:

Beyond housing, the program empowers you to rebuild your life. Livelihood programs and other initiatives are in place to help you achieve financial stability and improve your quality of life.

Emergency Assistance:

In times of calamities, the Emergency Housing Assistance Program (EHAP) provides financial aid or construction materials to rebuild damaged homes.

These offerings go beyond housing, ensuring that families can thrive in their new environments.

Types of Resettlement Projects

The program provides flexibility based on your needs and circumstances. Here are the three main types of resettlement options:

  1. In-City Resettlement:

This option allows you to remain within Metro Manila, minimizing disruptions to your daily life and access to work or school.

  1. Near-City Resettlement:

If space is unavailable in your current city, you may be relocated to a nearby municipality or city.

  1. Off-City Resettlement:

As a last resort, families may be relocated to areas outside Metro Manila. While this involves significant adjustments, it offers a safe and secure home.

Understanding these options can help you make the best choice for your family’s future.

A Recent Success Story

Take the St. Gregory Homes Housing Project in Malabon City as an example. This in-city resettlement project provided housing and community facilities to families living along waterways. Through this initiative, residents now enjoy safer living conditions and access to essential services. It’s a testament to the program’s impact and commitment to creating better lives.

Why Choose the NHA Housing Program?

Relocating can be a challenging experience, but the NHA Housing Program aims to make it seamless and beneficial. Here’s why this program stands out:

  • Safety First: Provides housing in safe areas, free from the dangers of floods and landslides.
  • Community-Centered: Builds vibrant communities with essential facilities and socio-economic support.
